As I was trying to come up with ideas for water games that would be fun to celebrate the beginning of summer, the thought came to my mind for a water piñata. It is now one of my favorite ideas and I can’t wait to use it at more parties.
These piñatas are so simple. All you do is stuff some bags with prizes, string them up and then give all the kids a squirt bottle. Let them go crazy squirting their bag to make it soggy so that all the prizes will fall out. They can use the squirt bottles after for a little water fight too.
Top 10 Reasons I love Water Piñatas
- Easy to make.
- Inexpensive.
- Goes with every theme.
- Everyone gets to play at the same time. No waiting in line to hit a piñata once and then your turn is over.
- You don’t have to watch out for kids standing too close to the swinging bat.
- None of the kids are running under a broken piñata to gather candy while the kid that broke the piñata open is still swinging the bat because he is blindfolded and has no idea.
- Everyone gets the same prizes so there is no whining that someone else was faster and gathered more candy.
- You can involve your kids in making and decorating them.
- What kid doesn’t love squirting water?
- They are so much fun!
How to Make a Water Paper Sack Piñata
Supplies Needed:
- paper sacks
- ribbon or string
- scissors
- prizes
- plastic bag to put prizes in if they cannot get wet
- squirt bottles
Directions:
- Stuff three bags inside each other. You can do more or less depending on how heavy the prizes are. I should have put a bottle of bubbles or something heavier in these bags to help break it open as the bags got wet. These colored bags have a slick coated finish which made them a little stronger than your average lunch sack.
- Flatten the opening of the bag and cut along the top in little strips. This gives the fringe look from the traditional piñatas.
- Gather some prizes and fill your bags.
- Tie the bags closed with some balloon ribbon or other string.
- Using a clothespin, clip the bags to a sting in the air.
- Give each kid a spray bottle to squirt their bag open and get their prizes that are inside. I use squirt bottles because they are easier for little hands to use. I would recommend smaller squirt bottles than these. This was our first time using this larger size and they were a little too heavy for my toddler.
I think I’m going to make them for the 4th of July with red, white and blue bags and maybe fill them with some sparklers and snaps, in a plastic bag of course, and then some pop rocks or other fun candy. How will you use these water piñatas at your next party? What will you fill them with?
