I was so happy to discover that premium vinyl can double as a dry erase board. I made a few projects to show you a number of ways it can be used.
This first project would be great for any office space. I bought some cork hot plates at Ikea and covered them with white premium vinyl in various designs. The top two I cut by hand, and used the geometric prisms die cut on the bottom one. Group them together or use alone to write messages and pin photos.
Create various sizes of piggy banks for different goals. The large green jar is a family piggy bank to save for a vacation. Once that goal is reached, erase the label and write on the next family savings goal. The blue jar uses the same concept, but on a smaller level. Each child can create their own piggy bank and label their savings goal on the jar.
Supplies:
- Mason Jar
- Acrylic Paint
- Silhouette Premium Vinyl
- Basic Labels
Instructions:
- Pour paint inside mason jar. Swirl around until all sides are coated. Do not use a brush or you will get uneven coverage. Pour excess paint out of the jar and back into the bottle.
- Let dry
- Using your Silhouette machine and premium vinyl, cut out the basic label of your choice. Place it on your jar.
- Write your savings goal on the label using a dry erase marker.
Tip: Test your dry erase markers on a scrap of vinyl first. Some colors didn’t erase as well as others, but a little Windex and paper towel cleaned it off easily.
Have any of you ever used vinyl as a dry erase board? I’d love to hear about it, or any projects you now have in mind?

Hi, there. Just discovered your blog. I haven’t tried this (yet) but I did discover that this type of vinyl takes chalk well. I always thought you needed the special “chalkboard vinyl” but I have had great success with the black vinyl AND white vinyl.
I have only tried chalk on the chalkboard vinyl. I’ll have to give it a try on the regular vinyl. Thanks so much for the tip!
