DIY: Make Gift Bags from Envelopes

3 bags square

I have a friend who always packages up every gift beautifully. It’s her thing and she does it well. She has a scrapbook kit club and every kit she packages and ships out is beautifully wrapped. Presentation is everything! Through the years of knowing Jeana, she has inspired me to take a little more time with packaging. Putting that extra time into the outside of the gift, can make what is inside even sweeter. And, I mean, who doesn’t love opening pretty packages?

I have a really easy tutorial for your today showing you how to make gift bags from envelopes. Can you believe each bag took less than 10 minutes? You can use any size envelope and embellishments you already have. Head over to the Craftsy blog for a full tutorial and some close-up photos of each back with written instruction.5 envelopes to gift bags

Tropical Paradise

tropical cupcakes

Back in May I was invited to attend the Silhouette Summit in Hawaii that Silhouette hosted to debut their new products coming out this year. It was so fun, obviously, and I came back so rejuvenated and inspired by all the beauty those islands hold. I apparently came back on Hawaiian time, because it took me a few months to get back into the swing of things and create these tropical paradise designs. Haha!

Pineapple and Coconut Boxes

The pineapple and coconut box are fun to use as decor for a luau, to hold utensils and treats, or to use as gift box containing a party favor. You can find some simple instructions for assembling the boxes on Amanda Coleman’s blog, or more detailed step-by-step instructions using my 3D apple tutorial that is very similar to these shapes.

Cupcake Wrappers

One of the reasons I love cupcake wrappers so much is they can dress up any cupcake. I am not a baker and don’t have the talent of making beautifully frosted cupcakes. I can swirl on some white frosting and add some sprinkles though. With the addition of the cupcake wrappers and toppers, they look professional and almost make it look like I know what I’m doing. ;) Plus, my dessert now coordinates with the rest of my party which is always a good thing.

Here’s another look at the gift card envelopes. The card slides in to complete the image through the cut-out piece on the envelopes. Fun, right? You can write a little a message on the card, then slip it in the envelope with the gift card. So simple, but such a thoughtful touch.palm tree gift card 2

Host a Luau this summer and I know all your guests will enjoy these fun tropical designs too.

Paper Easter Basket

easter flower basket crop

There is something so simple and soothing about the color white. I love how it softens everything up and adds so much light. I did a lot of white on white with this paper Easter basket and love how it makes the peach flower pop even more. Just think how beautifully it would show off a basket full of colored Easter eggs. Wouldn’t it make the perfect gift bag for a friend this spring?easter flower basket detail crop Easter flower basket side crop

All of these die cuts are available in the Silhouette design store and you can find a tutorial to make the flower here.

Valentine Detective Party | Party Favors

detective kit

This is the final post of the Valentine Detective Party. Today I’m sharing all the party favors and little details that helped really bring the theme of the party to life. The spy kit pictured above was issued to every agent/guest when they arrived at the party. I found the mustaches at the dollar store. The glasses are from Amazon. They are a little big for kids though. The mini magnifying glasses are also from Amazon. Hallelujah for Amazon Prime! Am I right?!

detective credentials

I made credentials for each guest to wear. You can have their parents email you a picture, or pull one from social media. Download the credentials print and cut file, then open it in Silhouette Studio. Now you can replace the filler info with each child’s info. I also included the font names in the file so you can download the same ones to match if you want. Import each child’s photo on the tag. Print then cut.

The clear cases are from Walmart. I have seen them at the dollar store before too. You can purchase the lanyards from Amazon.

detective badge

I love how the Silhouette Printable Gold Foil brings this secret agent badge to life. Download the badge, then print and cut it using your Silhouette. Cut another badge out of chipboard to make the badge more sturdy. Peel the backing off of the gold foil and adhere it to the chipboard. Peel the backing off the pin and stick it at the top of the heart on the back. Your badges are now ready to wear.

spy notebook and pen

These tiny notebooks are from Walmart. I think there were three in a pack for like $0.89. I love those kinds of prices. :) The spy pens are so cool. The ink is completely invisible until you use the light at the top of the pen to shine over your message. It’s like magic!

detective pen

Side note: I’ve been using these to keep my kids busy when I need to get work done. I draw a bunch of shapes on a paper and they try to find them all with the light. It’s a great activity for a busy/quiet bag.

evidence bag

Last but not least is this adorable party favor bag for the kids to take home with “evidence” of a good time. We had a Valentine exchange and used these as our Valentine boxes/bags. They were also used to haul all the spy/detective kit goodies home.

Download the evidence print and cut file. I put my paper bags through my laminator to “iron” them extra flat. Feed through your printer folded end first. My local copy shop also printed them on their machines for me too.

I have really enjoyed sharing all the details from my Valentine Detective Party. I hope you have found all these ideas helpful in hosting one of your own. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Gold Foil Printing Tutorial | FREE Download

joy goild foil gift tag 2 blog

One of the favorite projects at my advent workshop was gold foiling tags. Everyone couldn’t believe how easy it was. I have a gold foil printing tutorial for you today showing how you can make your own gold foil prints at home. Professional printers charge a lot to gold foil, but for a tiny fraction of the cost you can do it yourself in only a few minutes. The key is using laminating foil (available in a variety of colors) and laser prints. Download your FREE tags and follow the instructions below to create your own gold foil gift tags.

Supplies Needed:

laminating foil
laser printed tags
laminator or iron
text weight paper
scissors
twine

gold foil tutorial 1

Instructions:

  1. Place laser printed tag with design face up.
  2. Place gold foil on printed design. Gold side up.
  3. Keep the foil in position and place in between a half sheet of text weight paper. Cardstock is too thick and won’t allow the gold foil to get hot enough to adhere to the printed design.
  4. Set your laminator to the highest setting. If using an iron, set to the highest dry setting.gold foil tutorial 2
  5. Send the half sheet of paper through the laminator, folded end first.
  6. If using an iron, place on a hard surface and press down firmly on the half sheet of paper for about 30 seconds. Make sure to iron over the entire area of the printed design inside the paper. You may have to test out different times with your iron. Be sure to protect the hard surface you are ironing on with a thin cloth, while still keeping the surface firm.
  7. Peel off gold foil.
  8. Finish your tag with a string.

You may have tiny flecks that don’t completely transfer to the printed design. All of the tags are printed in gold to help mask the little imperfections that come with doing it at home. This technique isn’t perfect, but for the price and convenience, you can’t go wrong.

Brush Script Cards

full heart crop

I have some new brush script cards in the Silhouette store today. They are sized 4×6 and 3×4, perfect for journaling and scrapbooking. I scaled them down and used them as tags on little gifts for friends. I love this top quote. It fits me perfectly. With twin toddler boys and a 2 month old baby, my hands are definitely full, but so is my heart. A friend of mine just had twins and I knew this tag was the best fit for her treat.

Temporary Tattoo Paper Tutorial | FREE Printable

tattoo tutorial BLOG

My Valentine party is today, and I wanted to quickly pop in and give you a tutorial on using the Tattoo Paper from Silhouette. This stuff is seriously awesome! You can use it on just about any surface! I’m going to show you how I used it on the plaster heart magnets I made.

tattoo tutorial BLOG

The tattoo paper comes with great instructions on the box, but I thought I’d just give you a visual step-by-step of the process.

  1. Print out your designs on the shiny side of the paper. I have provided some designs for you as a FREE download. Make sure to mirror the image before printing so your words aren’t backwards on your project after you transfer the image. Peel the top strip off of the blue sticky sheet.
  2. Line up the sticky side of the paper with the top edge of your designs. Press and seal out all the bubbles.
  3. Carefully transfer the rest of the clear sticky sheet from its blue backing onto your printed designs.
  4. Rub over the design making sure the adhesive transfers and also smooth out any air bubbles.
  5. Cut out your design to transfer.
  6. Peel the clear plastic off leaving the adhesive over your design. Put your design face down on the surface you’re transferring it to.
  7. Using a damp cloth, I used a wet wipe, press down on the design for about 15 seconds until the images transfers.
  8. You can spray with a clear sealant to protect your design if you would like. I didn’t on the magnets and they seem to be holding up fine.

Isn’t that amazing?!  will see you tomorrow with a free download of a Valentine card to go with the magnets. You can see a sneak peak on my Instagram.

DIY Heart Magnets

heart magnet collection blog

I played around with some Plaster of Paris this past week and made some hearts using chocolate molds. I remember my mom making these with different chocolate molds when we were little. She would put hooks made out of wire in them so we could string them on necklaces after we spent the day painting them different colors.

Have a Ball this Valentine’s Day!

It was so fast and easy, I think I’ll try it out on more surfaces with future projects. Just follow the instructions on the back of the package.
