I tried these out a month or two ago when I was trying to find tiny 1″ honeycomb balls to hang on pineapples for a party favor. They were hard to find online and when I did find some they were $1 a piece. That was too pricey in my book, so I kept looking and stumbled on honeycomb paper pads. It’s a blank canvas of honeycomb paper where you can cut out your own designs. I was hesitant to try it because I thought it would be hard to cut and get a nice edge that wasn’t chewed up from my scissors trying to cut through so many layers. I was pleasantly surprised at the results and that my scissors were able to cut through it.

The honeycomb paper pads come in various sizes and glue widths (the spacing between each glue line.) I needed to make 1″ balls so I chose the pad with the smallest glue width, 1/4″. For small shapes use a pad with a small glue line width. For larger pads, use a pad with a large glue line width.

3D Honecomb shapes are really simple to make, but all shapes must be symmetrical. Draw half of your shape onto the pad. Make sure the center of your shape runs perpendicular to the glue lines. For example: The straight edge of my half circle (center of full circle) runs vertically on my paper, while all the glue lines are horizontal.

Once you have drawn your half shapes filling your paper, cut them out.

Fan out your cut shapes and glue the front and back together to make your 3D shape. If you’re going to hang them, glue a string in between your front and back layer.

I hope you enjoy working with honeycomb paper pads as much as I have.

  1. We used to run honeycomb paper thru the die cut machines at Archivers. I think they will work with Big Shot and Cuddlebug. There are stamp/die sets made for this.
